What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a safe and highly effective manual exfoliation technique. Using a sterile scalpel, dermaplaning removes the surface debris which is made up of dead skin cells. The process will also remove the vellus hair from across the face.

Dermaplaning can be performed monthly with little to no downtime.

Who can benefit from dermabrasion or dermaplaning?

Men and women of all ages can benefit from dermabrasion and dermaplaning. Important factors that help to determine the effectiveness of both treatments include the following:

  • Skin type
  • Skin coloring
  • Medical history

Dermaplaning is similar to shaving in that both use a blade to remove unwanted facial hair, but the similarities stop there. While the dermaplaning treatment rids the skin of the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz), it also encourages skin cell renewal and leaves the face looking refreshed and more youthful.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

The benefits of dermaplaning depend on your skin type, tone, medical history, and the quality of the professional performing your dermaplaning.

The benefits of dermaplaning are cosmetic and may include:

  • Brighter, more youthful skin tone
  • Removing small hairs or peach fuzz
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smoother skin
  • Ease hyperpigmentation
  • Evening skin tone
  • Removing bacteria and clearing pores to limit breakouts
  • Reducing deep scars from acne or pox

For maximum benefits of dermaplaning, seek out a referral for a well-reviewed practitioner in your area.

Vellus hair

Terminal hair

Terminal hair

is short, barely noticeable thin hair that develops on most of a person’s body during childhood. Exceptions include the lips, the back of the ear, palms of hands, soles of feet, the naval and scar tissue. The density of this hair will vary for everyone. Usually, each strand of vellus hair is less than 2mm long and the follicle is attached to arrector pili muscle and not to a sebaceous gland.

Terminal hair

Terminal hair

Terminal hair

usually grows on arms, legs, face and head. Different parts of the body will grow different types of terminal hair. Follicles in charge of growing terminal hair have sebaceous glands. The glands are responsible for lubricating the hair and skin. It does so by secreting an oily/ waxy matter known as sebum. Sebum is what can cause people to have oily hair. Terminal hair may cause some inconveniences, especially to women who have to deal with facial hair. It is important to understand that hormones are involved in the growing process. Some clients may require a consultation with a doctor and look at long term methods of removal such as laser hair removal.
